The Earl Warren Middle School Music Program offers two courses in music instruction.
The Symphonic Band course is comprised of beginner students and students with multiple years of experience. Our goals are to develop students’ understanding of, and ability to play their chosen musical instrument in a performing ensemble, and gain an appreciation for the arts. The fall semester focuses on scales and skill development, and there are at least two public performances including the EWMS Arts Festival. In the spring, we plan to attend a music festival for adjudication and awards, and conclude the year with a Spring Arts Festival. Students will learn the importance of teamwork to accomplish the shared goals of the ensemble. Regular practice at home is expected. Providing your own instrument to participate is necessary, however, our program does own a few instruments that may be available for learner use (please ask before school starts to secure an instrument as inventory is limited).
The Guitar class requires no prior experience. All levels are welcome. The course, for Acoustic Guitar, is designed for students to learn traditional staff notation, scales, and songs using melody and chord accompaniment. We will explore many genres in this music class, including the use of electric intruments. Composition is also part of this class, and we may utilize personal devices for projects. Our goal is to provide students with a comprehensive musical experience culminating in a lifelong appreciation for music. Students in this class will perform as an ensemble at least twice this year at the EWMS Arts Festivals in December and May. We do expect all class members to participate.
