English

In English 7, students are introduced to literature centered around the theme, "A Quest for Identity"; English 8 is organized around the theme, "The Search for Justice." In both 7th and 8th grade English, the curriculum includes the study of short stories, novels, drama, poetry, expository texts, and grammar. Students participate in meaningful class discussions, creative projects, speeches (both informal & formal) and some theater arts.  With an understanding of literary analysis, students draft  cohesive multi-paragraph essays that address given prompts.  Students also express & share their insights with the class through writing formats such as "scripted dialogues."  All 8th grade students participate in the Direct Writing Assessment, which functions as a benchmark assessment to determine if students have mastered the art of writing a persuasive essay.
